Lunsford's Triple in Sixth Assures Bears of 8-2A Title

WOODLAWN - Dillon Lunsford's bases-loaded triple in the bottom of the sixth pushed Woodlawn in front for the final time as the Bears clinched the 82A conference championship with a 9-6 win over the Ouachita Warriors Tuesday at Woodlawn.The matchup between the teams atop the league standings left the Bears a 11-0 and the Warriors fell to 9-2, assuring Woodlawn of the title with one conference game left.Wooldawn will be the conference's no. 1 seed headed into next week's Class 2A South Region Tournament at Parkers Chapel. The Bears will play the no. 4 seed from the 7-2A conference at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 2.Tuesdays' game went back and forth with Ouachita drawing first blood only to see Woodlawn battle back each time.After two scoreless innings, back-to-back singles briefly gave the Warriors a 2-0 lead in the third before the Bears answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame.Triston Bates' lead-off single was followed by an RBI double from Peyton Wells. Two walks then loaded the bases, and Tate Hall had another double to clear the bases and give Woodlawn a 4-2 lead.The Bears added to their lead with bases-loaded fielder's choice in the fourth to go up 5-2.Ouachita battled back with two runs in the fifth off a single and a sacrifice bunt to close it to 5-4, and then moved in front with a two-out single that scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth, giving the Warriors a 6-5 lead.Woodlawn answered again as an error, a hit batter and walk loaded the bases, setting up Lunsford to deliver his three-run shot into center to give the lead back to the Bears, 8-6. Lunsford then scored on a passed ball push it to 9-6.The Warriors did get their lead-off batter aboard in the seventh, but a fly out and double play ended the game.Hall started on the mound for Woodlawn and went four innings, allowing five hits and one walk while striking out four.
