Bears Blast JC To Win 8-2A

JUNCTION CITY - Brayden Jones used a homerun and two doubles to drive in six runs as the Woodlawn Bears wrapped up an undefeated 8-2A conference championship season with a 16-1 rout of the Junction City Dragons in four innings last Friday at Junction City.Woodlawn finished the regular season 12-0 in conference play and 28-1 overall. There was no 8-2A district tournament in baseball this year since the schools played a double roundrobin schedule.The Bears are set to play the Dierks Outlaws at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 2, in the first round of the Class 2A South Region Tournament at Parkers Chapel.Woodlawn enters the tournament as the no. 1 seed from the 8-2A while Dierks (7-9 overall) is the no. 4 seed from the 7-2A. The winner will earn one of the region's four playoff berths to the Class 2A State Tournament to be held May 9-11 at Palestine-Wheatley High School.The Bears are seeking their fourth consecutive state championship and the program's 10thoverall.Woodlawn got off to a fast start against the Dragons, plating four runs in the top of the first.After a strikeout to start the frame, Garrett Weatherford, Jones and Tate Hall followed with three consecutive singles to score the first run of the game. After a walk to Dillon Lunsford, Aidan Johnson delivered a tworun single to right, and Lunsford eventually scored on a passed ball to go up 4-0.Jones and Hall both had RBI doubles in the top of the second to extend the Bears' lead to 6-0. Junction City scored its lone run off a singe in the bottom of the second.Woodlawn answered by scoring five runs with two out in the third.After Junction City retired the first two batters on strikeouts to start the third, Triston Bates doubled and Peyton Wells singled to put two aboard. Bates scored on a passed ball before Weatherford drew a walk to still leave two runners on. Jones followed with a three-run homer.
