10 YEARS AGO MARCH 5, 2014 The filing deadline for the 2014 election cycle came to a close at noon Monday, with several locally contested races making this year's ballot, including those for state representative, county clerk, coroner, two Quorum Court positions and two constable positions.Moments after county Treasurer Jack Hopson reported that county revenues are down, Sheriff Jack Rodgers informed the Cleveland County Quorum Court that the county may have to find the money to make changes to the county jail to put it in compliance with state regulations. Rodgers told the court that the county lacks an outside recreation area and an indoor visitation facility, both of which are required by state regulations. Rodgers did not have a price tag on how much these additions would cost. In addition to those possible costs, Rodgers also informed the court that the sheriff's department may have to spend more on housing female prisoners this year.Large crowds were here Saturday to attend the Backwoods Benefit Poultry Show and the Jake's Day event sponsored by the Cleveland County Cutters & Strutters Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation.The Rison Lady Wildcats were edged by Foreman, 54-49, in the opening round of the Class 2A South Regional Tournament at Gurdon last Thursday.20 YEARS AGO MARCH 10, 2004 The interim school board of what will be called the Cleveland County School District was set Monday night in a joint meeting of the Rison and Kingsland school boards at Rison. The interim seven-member board will consist of the five existing Rison School Board members of Cliff Hopson, Jeffie Hyatt, Jeff Prescott, James Wilson and Sandra Wright, and two Kingsland School Board members, Ricky Spencer and Willie Rainey. On March 1, the Kingsland School Board voted for voluntary administrative consolidation with the Rison School District.The Cleveland County Sheriff's Department is looking for a suspect following a Friday morning investigation into a break-in at theā€¦
