Box 325, Rison, AR 71665, phone (870) 830-2056 or 870-325-6412; or email at sadler. stan@yahoo. com) 10 YEARS AGO JANUARY 2, 2014 Cleveland County Judge Gary Spears said drainage improvements made more than a year ago probably saved the county hundreds of thousands of dollars in road damage when more than 5 inches of rain fell throughout the county within about a 12hour period on Saturday, December 21. Estimated damage to county roads, several of which were closed, totaled over $70,000. Spears said the rain gauge at his home near New Edinburg showed more than 7.5 inches that day, while measurements of 5 inches or more were common at other locations in the county. The state is expected to declare the county a disaster area. The storm damage left the county starting the 2014 budget year with an unexpected expense that was not included in what was already a tight budget. Roger L. McClellan, a native of New Edinburg, Brigadier General and the Joint Force Land Component Commander of the Arkansas National Guard, officially retired from service after a 36-year military career. McClellan led the Arkansas National Guard for five years before relinquishing command in November to Brig. Gen. Patricia Anslow, the first female general officer of the Arkansas National Guard. McClellan and his wife, the former Patricia Childers, now live at New Edinburg. Tristan Ward of the Rison Wildcats and Jeffery Jones of the Woodlawn Bears were named to the 2013 Class 2A All-State football team. 20 YEARS AGO JANUARY 7, 2004 Next Tuesday, voters in the Kingsland School District will decide on whether or not they want to pay another 6 mills tax to help construct a new high school building and 300-seat auditorium to replace the old high school stracture that was destroyed by fire on May 25, 2003.
