10 YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 26, 2014 The opening of the one-week filing period for candidates seeking office this year brought a few unexpected surprises to the local political landscape by Tuesday afternoon. Multiple candidates have filed for county clerk, county coroner and for Justice of the Peace District 9. The filing deadline is at noon on Monday.The Kingsland City Council agreed with Mayor Charles Crain's recommendation Monday night to have the county to continue to provide the city's trash service should a proposed county-wide 2-cent sales tax be decided on by voters in May. The proposed tax would support the funding of a trash pickup service, as opposed to a monthly billing system for customers as is now being done.A massive red oak tree, located just outside the northeast corner of the courthouse here, was cut down Tuesday afternoon for fear the leaning tree was about to fall onto the building.Plenty of activities are scheduled here Saturday, including the third annual Backwoods Benefit Poultry Show and the annual Cleveland County Cutters & Strutters Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation hosting their 'Jakes Day' for youth.Thanks to a nice run in the 72A East District Tournament last week at Norphlet, the Rison Lady Wildcats earned the No. 3 seed to advance to the South Regional Tournament at Gurdon, where they will face Foreman Thursday afternoon. Rison was defeated by Strong, 46-36, in the semifinals of the district tournament.20 YEARS AGO MARCH 3, 2004 Board president Sheila Currier cast the deciding vote Monday, as the Kingsland School Board approved a motion, 4-3, for an administrative consolidation with the neighboring Rison School District. The Kingsland School Board, acting on the new legislative mandate that school districts with less than 350 students must submit a consolidation plan with a larger school district before April 1, 2004, decided between proposals from the Rison and Fordyce school districts.
