 10 YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 19, 2014 Unless there is a rush of lastminute candidates, it looks as though the 2014 election cycle could have the fewest locally contested political races in several years.The City of Rison used a $7,000 'emergency grant' secured through the Southeast Arkansas Economic Development District to replace a culvert along Niven Road in the north part of town with a railroad tank car. Last fall, the City of Rison used money from the state's new highway sales tax to repave Niven Road, the first major improvement to the road in more than 20 years. Not long after the road improvements were completed, the area was hit with two floods, and while the road itself did not sustain any damage, the culvert beneath the road just north of Hixson Lumber began to collapse, causing the support materials beneath the road to begin washing away.A Community Power Prayer Meeting will be held Monday evening at the Rison United Methodist Church to lift up the names of several people suffering greatly from cancer in the community, and to pray for healing.Tyson Hume of Woodlawn pinned Grant Webb of Greenbrier in 1:48 to win the Class 1A5A state title in the 120-pound division at the Arkansas State High School Wrestling Tournament held Friday and Saturday at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.20 YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 25, 2004 The Fordyce School Board decided Monday to hold a special called meeting Thursday evening to decide on a formal resolution offering to consolidate administration with the Kingsland School District. However, the Rison School Board isn't quite ready to throw in the towel just yet in its efforts to form a merger with the neighboring Kingsland School District, which includes practically all of the territory west of Saline River in the county. The Kingsland School Board is scheduled to meet Monday night, when a decision is expected to be made on which district the school will merge/consolidate with.Incumbent State Senator Brenda Gullett and…
