10 YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 12, 2014 Cleveland County has agreed to honor the City of Rison's contract with Waste Management should a proposed 2-cent sales tax for solid waste pickup be approved by voters in a special election in May. Should the tax be approved, both incorporated municipalities inside the county - the cities of Rison and Kingsland - will have the option of taking a pro-rated amount of the tax money to be used for solid waste, or allow the county to keep the money and run the program for them. The revenue generated through the tax is supposed to eliminate the need for trash fees inside both the cities and the county. About two to three inches of snow blanketed Cleveland County Friday night and early Saturday morning. It was the county's first snowfall of the winter season. A second round of winter weather moved into the county Tuesday night, covering roadways in the county with sleet and snow. Both school districts in the county dismissed classes today as a result of the conditions. The board of the Cleveland County School District voted to renew the contracts for Kingsland elementary principal Danny Durey, Rison elementary principal Jeff McKinney, and Rison High School assistant principal Davy King. The only principal's contract that was not renewed was that of Rison High School principal Kent Baggett, who has announced that he will be retiring at the end of his current contract in June. The board had accepted Baggett's resignation in a previous meeting. The Woodlawn School Board approved a bid of $17,676 for new equipment that will be used in the new digital communications class that was started this year at the high school. The board also extended contracts for Superintendent Dudley Hume, Jeff Wylie, high school principal, and Genell Davis, elementary principal. Cleveland County has the third fewest people who have enrolled in the new 'Private Option' for health insurance coverage, according to data released by the Arkansas Department of Human…
