Box 325, Rison, AR 71665, phone (870) 830-2056 or 870-325-6412; or email at sadler.stan@yahoo.com) 10 YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 5, 2014 It's now official - Cleveland County voters will have an opportunity during the May 20 primary election to decide if they want to support a 2-cent sales tax to replace their quarterly trash bills. County residents now pay $19.10 monthly for garbage pickup. City of Rison customers, served by Waste Management, pay about $6 less per household than the county due to the fact that the city has shorter routes. County customers are served by Get Rid of It, Inc. Some members of the Rison City Council voiced their opposition to Cleveland County's proposed 2-cent sales tax. If approved, the sales tax is supposed to generate enough revenue that there would no longer be a need to charge residents for trash pickup. Several local Rison residents said the 2-cent tax would cost them more than they are paying now for the trash fees inside the city. The Cleveland County Quorum Court held its first regular monthly meeting inside the Hall-Morgan Veterans Building Monday night. The court voted in January to start holding its monthly meetings in the new structure located across Sycamore Street from the court square due to better acoustics and lighting than the second floor courtroom in the courthouse, where the court has traditionally met. The Rison City Council agreed to hold a public hearing sometime in March to hear the latest proposal from Union Pacific Railroad to close the Maple Street crossing and open a new crossing at Mockingbird Lane, located near Veterans Park. This is the third time the railroad has approached the city about closing the Maple Street crossing in the extreme south edge of town. Just last month, the council rejected another request by Union Pacific to close the crossing. …
