10 YEARS AGO DECEMBER 18, 2013 As predicted about two months ago, it appears as though Cleveland County will finish 2013 with a balance of a little more than $100,000 left in county general, shoring up what had been an ailing budget account in recent years. Budget cuts in 2013 apparently helped reverse the trend of dwindling year-end balances. Judge Gary Spears had every department in county general cut their budgets by 8 percent for 2013. Mayor Charles Crain informed the Kingsland City Council Monday night that he has identified four streets located on the south side of the railroad tracks that will be paved using money from the new statewide halfcent sales tax for highways and streets. The council also approved the 2014 city budget, with projected general fund revenue of $89,700 for the year and $86,300 in expenses. The Rison Lions Club float, using the theme of the 'Grinch Who Stole Christmas,' won first place at the Cleveland County Christmas Parade and Festival held last Thursday evening in downtown Rison. Wilson Bros. Lumber Co. held its annual barbecue Tuesday at their maintenance shop in the 'Y' community, with approximately 2,200 pounds of meat prepared for the large gathering of people attending the event. Cleveland County has already surpassed its deer harvest for all of the 2012-13 season and is currently on course to finish as high as second in the state for total kills during the 2013-14 season. According to the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission on Tuesday, there were 5,750 deer harvested in Cleveland County so far in the 2013-14 season, second best in the state only behind Union County. Des Arc Eagles head football coach Dustin Prescott, a Rison High School alum of 2004, has been named the 2013 Class 2A Farm Bureau Coach of the Year. Des Arc, with a season record of 11-2 as champion of the 6-2A Conference, will face Junction City on Saturday at Little Rock for the state title. 20 YEARS AGO DECEMBER 24, 2003 The Herald took a week off for theā€¦
