Lady Bears Hold On To Beat Lady ‘Cats
RISON - The Woodlawn Lady Bears got off to a fast start but had to hold on at the end to fend off the Rison Lady Wildcats, 11-6, in the season opener for the Cleveland County rivals Monday afternoon at Veterans Park in Rison.
The Lady Bears led 6-0 after two innings and were on the verge of invoking the 10-run mercy rule in the sixth when Woodlawn’s Morgan Brown led off with a single.
Up to that point, Woodlawn has been cashing in on just about any baserunner but that would suddenly change.
Rison senior Katie Reynolds, who was moved from pitcher to shortstop at the start of the sixth, would rob the next batter by snagging a blazing line drive and then doubling up Brown before she could get back to first base. Madeleine Rhodes then struck out the next Lady Bear to retire the sides and extend the game to the full seven innings.
And just as Rison’s defense started to warm up in the sixth inning, its offense did the same.
Brown, the Woodlawn starter, had kept the Lady Wildcats in check for most of the game but she would run into some trouble in the seventh.
