 10 YEARS AGO APRIL 9, 2014 Even though it's only April, county treasurer Jack Hopson warned the Cleveland County Quorum Court Monday night that the county general budget could be 'running in the red' by the end of the year. The county's sales tax revenue for county general was down for the third consecutive month, and the budget for the county is running behind 2013. While projections are showing a possible shortfall, no formal action on the matter was suggested by the court.A severe thunderstorm that passed through Cleveland County late Thursday night and early Friday morning knocked out power, toppled trees and did some structural damage. Judge Gary Spears said the hardest hit areas seemed to be west and north of a line from Kingsland to Staves to the Kedron area, in addition to areas along the Bradley-Cleveland County line. The Woodlawn School District was forced to cancel classes last Friday after the storm snapped some utility poles that provide power to the school and surrounding area. The storms were triggered by a cold front that eventually dropped temperatures to a high of only 50 degrees on Sunday.Organizers of the South Arkansas Homesteading Conference, held this past Saturday at Pioneer Village in Rison, say the conference can become an annual event. An estimated crowd of 150 to 175 people from 18 different counties in Arkansas attended the one-day conference, dedicated to information about small-scale farming and selfsufficient living.The Cleveland County Quorum Court unanimously approved separate motions to allow the City of Rison out of its 99-year lease for the ballfields at Veterans Park and to extend a new lease to the Rison Lions Club to take on the youth baseball and softball fields.
