10 YEARS AGO MAY 7, 2014 A complaint from a resident about water quality to the Rison City Council Tuesday night led to a discussion about the matter, but no solution was ever reached about what the city could afford to do about it. The complaint from the resident focused on the taste of the water and stains the water was leaving behind in sinks and toilets. It was explained that the main culprit was probably old galvanized metal water pipes that serve the area where the resident lives, a few blocks west of Main Street.After seeing a steady decline in county sales tax revenue over the past three months, County Treasurer Jack Hopson delivered some good news to the Quorum Court Monday night after the April numbers showed sales tax revenue was up more than $11,000 over the previous month. The only explanation that Hopson could come up with for the unexpected uptick in sales tax revenue was that people were apparently spending their income tax refunds.The first two of four public meetings were conducted Thursday and Tuesday by County Judge Gary Spears to explain the proposed 2-percent sales tax to replace trash bills for county residents. The proposal will be on the May 20 primary election ballot. The proposed tax will be used only for solid waste.Sheriff Jack Rodgers said that the Cleveland County Sheriff's Department executed a search warrant at a residence in north Rison on Sunday for the illegal sale of alcohol at the location. The search warrant was obtained after the sheriff's department received several complaints concerning alcohol being sold at the residence. The individual at the residence did not have a permit for the sale of alcohol, in addition to the sale of alcohol on a Sunday being a violation of the law. An arrest warrant was issued for Earl Young, Sr., at the location. Several individuals at the location were detained during the search.The Woodlawn Lady Bears softball team made a clean sweep of the 7-2A East regular season and conference tournament…
